John Deere 4020

The John Deere 4020, a prominent agricultural tractor model, was in production from 1964 to 1972. It succeeded the 4010 in the New Generation series, offering upgrades like increased horsepower, sturdier rear axles, and a differential lock.

With three engine options – diesel, gasoline, and LPG – the 4020 Diesel led the pack with a robust six-cylinder engine delivering 84 drawbar and 91 PTO horsepower. It featured an eight-speed Syncro Range transmission, with a power shift variant available. Customization options included dual rear wheels and an enclosed cab with heating and air conditioning.

The 4020’s popularity was remarkable, with over 184,000 units produced, making it the era’s most sought-after tractor. Minor improvements included repositioned hydraulic levers, a slimmer muffler, and an extended gear shift lever.

In 1969, John Deere introduced the 4000, based on the 4020 but lighter. The 4000 offered the same power with fewer features and smaller rear axles, appealing to cost-conscious buyers, but the 4020 remained the favorite. In 1972, the 4020 was succeeded by the 100-horsepower 4230 in John Deere’s Generation-II tractors.
